Before the refrigerator there was the ice box. Ice was harvested on the lakes during the winter months and stored in sawdust, partly underground in ice huts, for use in the warmer months.  My husband’s family had cottages on Wood Lake in Muskoka and when I began to go there with him I loved going to Milne’s waterfront store by boat for ice.  We would go back into the trees to the ice hut and Gary would haul a block out of the sawdust with the hooks and struggle to the boat.  I remember his grandmother telling about the time they lost a team of horses through the ice while cutting. It always stayed with me and this painting is a tribute to that loss.

Welcome back Merry Olde Christmas. The most magical holiday of all!

This painting was inspired by the memory of good times spent with family and the thrill of playing in the snow with friends. For a few days the world stood still, ready for comfort and joy.

Everyone remembers the first day of school.  I was always a little nervous about what this day had in store. Once we were all together again there was usually a feeling of excitement.  Lots of chatter, new pencils and books, and hopefully some new friends. The end of the summer but the beginning of a brand new year.

I think Fall is my favorite season.  The colour palette is exceptional. God’s gift of warmth before the long, cold winter.  There is something about a big beautiful harvest moon that inspires me to count my blessings and realize the love around me.

This is a traditional early American style of painting.  I feel the term “early American” refers to the continent, without borders.  It is not a political statement but more a feel for what went before.  I love the peacefulness of this style and this painting is my impression of that genre.

Remember the joy of finding you did not have to go to school?  A wonderful day spent in a winter wonderland of skating and skiing and snowman building---- after the shovelling was finished, of course!  The benefits of a Canadian childhood.  I still think a good snow day makes everyone feel happy to see their neighbours and thankful to live in the four seasons.

Kleinburg’s Binder Twine Delivery Festival is a re-creation of Charlie Shaw’s Binder Twine Delivery Night.  Each year when the twine came in by train, Charlie wanted to make sure the local farmers picked up their twine before his mice could eat it.  Early in the fall he would invite them all to pick it up on the same day.  He threw in some food and entertainment and it became an annual event.

“The secret of the Binder Twine is that it has awakened in all of us a sense of the past and a feeling that the past ought to be understood and preserved in order to make the future bearable.”  Pierre Berton, 1986.

There is something so comforting about rural life.  I always wished I had grown up on a farm.  The cows coming back to the barn to be milked is just like the tide coming in- it happens without fail.  What a sad thing that our family farms are disappearing.  There are still a few of these beautiful homesteads left to the north and west of Kleinburg and my husband and I enjoy driving around the countryside to see them.

I was inspired to paint this picture when the CBC lost the rights to the Hockey Night in Canada theme.  Stompin Tom’s song was suggested a few times as a replacement.  It made me remember playing on the back yard rink and watching my brother and his friends play pick up hockey.  Sometimes they even let me play, white skates, pompoms and all!

The magic of the four seasons is something we cherish in Canada.  We never know when to expect the first snow, and it sometimes feels a bit early.  It brings to life the anticipation of the season to come, and the realization that we need to prepare for it.

Affectionately known in the studio as “Ah Haba”, because it reminds us of the lovely little harbours in New England.  This painting began life as a class piece and then took on a life of its’ own.  I love to paint maritime scenes.  The hustle and bustle of a seaport is always exciting.

What a wonderful holiday.  Everything about Christmas makes us happy. The town tree, the carollers, bringing home the tree, window shopping and just being together are all the things that we love about the season.  My family feels so fortunate to have grown together in the small town of Kleinburg.  It really is a Christmas town.  We wish you a Merry Christmas – all year.

There was a wonderful pianist at the Autumn Art Sale at the McMichael Gallery.  He played  “Saturday in the Park” and this painting just waltzed into my head.  As a very small child I went a few times to watch my Grandfather play cricket.  The St. Clair Cricket Club was near a park, and my Grandmother used to take me to buy peanuts and popcorn.  I was always amazed at the number of people all enjoying their Saturday.

What an exciting thing – the first automobile.  People came out of their houses to watch one pass by.  The horse is a bit worried.  He’s not sure why, but he feels this will not bode well for him.

In the 1800’s, itinerant artists used to hit all the county fairs and offer to paint the prize winning animals.  They painted them larger than life to fan the farmer’s ego.

Rufus Porter was a most amazing man.  He lived from 1792 until 1884 in New England. He was an inventor, an artist, an author, and the founder of the magazine Scientific American.  I discovered one of his murals in New Hampshire about l5 years ago and have been fascinated by him ever since.  One summer I took a wall mural class at The Rufus Porter Museum in Bridgton, Maine, and these paintings are a result of that class.  His simple style definitely influences my work.

These two paintings are a result of the joy of seeing protected old buildings in the shadow of development.  I know progress is inevitable but I truly hope that all the beautiful old buildings will not be lost.   We cannot appreciate our future if we do not honour our past.

These paintings were based on an old Vaudeville backdrop that I was fortunate enough to see many years ago.  They were first painted on a cabinet and taught as a class.  One day I was looking at the cabinet, and I had the urge to paint those beautiful old buildings again.  I love the softness and the feeling of the 1800’s.

My husband and I took our Carver down the Trent system and into the St. Lawrence River to visit our dear friends in the Thousand Islands.  Although we have travelled extensively, I still consider that trip to be our most enjoyable ever.  The peaceful farms and villages, and the beautiful islands in the River St. Lawrence have inspired many paintings for me.  I still love to paint the islands as I imagine them to have been centuries ago.

I have a pair of reproduction antique dollies from Williamsburg, Virginia. I was watching my little granddaughter play with them in the sunshine one day and realized how wonderful it was that a little 3 year old in the 21st century could get so much pleasure out of a pair of dolls from the 19th century. I had to paint them and add another, because little girls giggle in threes.

In the early l700s on the eastern seaboard of  Canada and the United States there were many towers erected in seaport towns, for the purpose of watching for approaching ships.  When a ship was sighted they would run up the flag of the country of origin.  All those waiting for goods from that country would head for the wharf to meet the ship.  A clever system.

PARTRIDGE IN A PEAR TREE

This is my favourite tree.  I call it the tree of life.  I added the partridge for fun.  I like to paint the tree of life for baby gifts.  It is a very old symbol, found in both mourning pictures and young girl’s needlework from the 1700 and 1800s.

I love everything about fall.  Indian corn is as old as the first nations.  It is a beautiful symbol of welcome and bountiful harvest.  This painting is created entirely of double loaded  stroke and line work, perfected through my love of traditional stroke design, and celebrating my favourite season.

This is a reproduction of the old art of theorem painting.  Done by fashionable ladies in art classes, and usually on velvet, these paintings were very popular in the 1800s.  Mine are a modern version painted in acrylics on masonite, but still the same old feeling.  Fruit and flowers were popular themes.
